With the rapid development of new technology, the muti-disciplinary and cross-cutting area has become a hot research topic. The development and integration of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System), wireless communication, embedded system and sensor technology, promoted the emergence and development of wireless sensor network (WSN). WSN is made up of sensor nodes in order to obtain certain phenomena of interest. As a new technology, WSN has been applied to many fields including military, office automation, industry monitor, environment protection and medical treatment. Localization technology, which belongs to the key technologies of WSN, plays a greate role in completely monitoring information about the surroundings.Firstly, the classification and estimate standard of localization algorithms in wireless sensor networks are presented in the thesis. Then according to the classification of Range-Free and Range-Based localization algorithms, an introduction to the localization algorithms in common use is given. There are two stages in the localization algorithm which is proposed in this thesis: the ranging stage and the localization stage. During the ranging period, after the comprehensive considerations of practicability, power consumption, cost and cubage of the sensor node, RSSI (Receive Signal Strength Indication) technology is adopted to measure the distance between the sensor nodes, the math model about the RSSI ranging is achieved from numbers of results of experiments. Aiming at the error from the RSSI ranging, one method to compensate the error is carried out. The math model comes out from the math deducing for the purpose of compensating the error from RSSI ranging. During the localization stage, the typical localization algorithm in existence based on RSSI is analyzed in the thesis, and one localization idea of distance difference based on SSDOA (Signal Strength Difference of Arrival) is proposed. Then equation group of the hyperbola is constructed and its solution applies the Chan algorithm to calculate the position coordinates of unknown nodes in WSN. The simulation models of Localization Algorithms of Distance Difference is built by MATLAB to analyze the localization error influenced by the ranging-error, then another MATLAB simulation model to disclose that the Localization Algorithm of Distance Difference has better localization performance after compared with the typical RSSI localization algorithm. The design process of ranging based on RSSI, localization and simulation of embedded wireless sensor networks is elaborated.At the last chapter of this thesis, the design of human-computer interface and software of the WSN monitoring system is presented, and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) module for wireless communication is composed of the hardware and the software which are introduced independently. Finally, the work flow of the whole WSN is presented.
