Positron Emission Tomography (PET) as a biomedical research technique and clinical diagnostic procedure is one of the most important applications in nuclear medical imaging device. PET uses the idea of injecting chemical compounds labeled with positron-emitting isotopes into a body to measure their spatial and temporal distribution externally. The development history and the basic principles of PET are introduced firstly, and the front-end electronics of PET is investigated. The basic electronics of positron imaging systems are composed of the preamplifier, shaper, main amplifier, constant fraction discriminator (CFD), coincidence circuit and so on. These components are described in detail in this paper. One of the most important factors of front-end electronics for PET is noise, and all the noise sources are discussed. Based on the study of front-end electronics, a new preamplifier is proposed, which can be equalized to a 2 order RC filter to eliminate the high frequency components of PMT pulse. The experiment results show that the preamplifier can improve the SNR of the signals, and enhance the temporal resolution of the system.
