In Wireless Sensor Networks, sensor node, being embedded device of small size, can only be equipped with a limited power source. Sensor nodes are limited in power, computational and communication capacities. Efficient MAC, routing and application layer protocols need to be designed, while topology control mechanisms also need to be optimized. Obviously, topology control mechanisms make a tremendous impact on the performance of sensor networks.Research on topology control can be divided into three categories: Power Control, Hierarchical Management or Cluster-based Topology Control, Heuristic Mechanisms. At present, many important achievements have been made on related research. Generally speaking, however, topology control of wireless sensor networks is not perfect yet, and there are some defects in most algorithms. Therefore, some important algorithms of topology control are introduced in the paper and their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Second, GAF algorithm and its improved algorithm which, based on the geographical location of the nodes, are introduced in details and analyzed. The advantages and shortcomings of GAF are summed up. A new problem is discovered, and a new clustering mechanism is raised with fuzzy control. Finally, simulation with MATLAB and its results are given.The simulation experiments show that the new clustering algorithm adapts to the requirement of topology control of wireless sensor networks, and there are some significance to the research of topology control.
