With the rapid development of computer, networks, communication and multimedia technologies, the information resource grows rapidly. Network storage technologies become the research focus. Its characteristics are storage equipment centered; data storage as a relatively independent storage system was separated from the traditional mainframe network.Modern storage systems require high reliability, high availability, high performance, dynamic scalability, easy to maintain and open etc., which call for the need for better storage management software. Storage management has become the most important factor to enterprise-level users. Resource management, device discovery and access control are an important part of the storage management. The existed device discovery and management methods in iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) storage system were analyzed. Aiming at their problems like need manual configuration, not suitable for large scale storage network, the iSNS (Internet Storage Name Service) protocol was introduced. iSNS can automatically configure the device discovery. It can be concentrated or distributed, and it can be used for large-scale storage networks, but also can make responses to the state changes of devices in network.Based on deep study of iSNS and iSCSI protocol, compared iSNS to device discovery methods in iSCSI system, the existed limitations were solved. The application model, message mechanisms, and necessary key attributes to support iSCSI were researched. In the end, a prototype of apply iSNS protocol in iSCSI storage system had been designed and implemented. Test work indicated that the desired goals were achieved.
