With the rapid development of optical fiber communication technology, in order to overcome the bottleneck restriction to the capacity upgrade in the communication network using electronic switches, people began to extensively study on optical switches. However , the earlier studied optical switches controlled by electricity have been unable to meet the requirement of all-optical networks, because of its slower switching time. Light-controlled optical switches, namely all-optical switches, have been paid more and more attention, because they have many advantages: with high speed and large capacity, and without O-E-O conversion.Optical bistability is an important nonlinear optical phenomenon with a great scientific significance. Since 1975, Gibbs and others in Bell laboratory experimentally found the optical bistability, the research on the optical bistability has mad a great progress in past 30 years. In recent years, the optical bistability in fiber devices become a new hot subject. Various configurations of fiber optical bistable devices have been investigated. People are extending their understanding to the optical bistability; and their research works on optical bistability are closer to the actual application. The optical bistable devices are regard as the devices, in which the light is controlling with light.Unlike the ordinary method to analyze the single-coupler fiber ring resonator, we calculate the relationship between the output power and the input power in single-coupler ring cavity through a parametric method, and obtain the different bistability curves when taking different parameters K andĪ³, in the double-coupler fiber ring resonator. These analyses will provide a reference for experimental study of optical bistable switches. In theory, we analyze the dynamic characteristic of single-coupler fiber ring resonator when giving pulse width for different values of input and output powers. Using perturbation method, we analyze the dynamic characteristics of double-coupler fiber ring resonator and the bistability curves in stability and instability regions. In experiment, we investigate the method of the fiber link, the loss measurement of flange in fiber connectors, and the methods of fabrication and measurement of coupler. Furthermore, we have experientially obtained the bistability curves in a double-coupler fiber ring resonator, which verifies the existence of optical bistability and the correctness of our theory.
