The space solar energy has a lot of advantages, such as high energy-flux density, keeping on stabilizing, and be free from the weather,and so on. It can be used in directly or indirectly pumped solid state laser. When indirectly pumping, the sunlight can illuminate the solar cell and produce the electric current and drive the diode laser. The launch diode laser can pump solid state laser. The conversion process is more complex between the sunlight and the laser energy and the efficiency is low. When directly pumped, it has no the middle link, thus there is higher efficiency between the sunlight and the laser,and the structure is more simple and reliable .Therefore, directly transforming the solar energy radiation to the coherent laser power is important.We mainly introduce the sunlight pumped Nd:YAG laser's characteristics and the application prospect. Then we simulate sunligh through the blackbody radiation of 5800 k to introduce the Nd:YAG laser crystal nature, the spatial sun ray radiation characteristic and carry on the analysis to the Nd:YAG laser crystal absorption spectrum and the solar spectrum match, theoretically have proven that Nd:YAG as the solar energy pumped laser material is feasible. We establish the sunlight pumped Nd:YAG laser theoretical model by the four-level laser rate equations. We have computed the laser threshold value and the slope efficiency of solar energy pumped Nd:YAG, and obtained the laser power size which might output. The laser thermal reaction has been analyzed. We carries on the theoretical analysis to find the plank laser might effectively eliminate first step thermal reaction. Through analysing the parabolic type and compound parabolic concentrators, we design a portfolio-type solar collector and a experiment which is about 20 w Nd:YAG laser which is directly solar-pumped .Direct sunlight-pumped Nd:YAG laser is practically valuable for the wireless energy transmission, laser propulsion, space laser communication, and other aspects.
