With the rapid development of network and computer technology, more and more multimedia application appear in the Internet. For example, living broadcasts, video conferences, long distance education and so on. For this application, Multicast is considered a efficient solving way. But as the result of the technology and market, the IP Multicast can not be massive deployed on the Internet. In order to solve the deployment issue of IP Multicast, researchers give out the idea on the Application Layer Multicast in recent years. The thesis mainly aims at research on the application layer multicast based on P2P. In the paper, we study some realization projects of the existing application layer multicast and compare the advantages and disadvantages. Then we research some projects of the application layer multicast implemented by using P2P technology. Based on the research, we design a kind of prototype system of the application layer multicast based on P2P overlay network technology, describe module composing, architecture, and basic flow of system circulation. In the prototype system, node self organization a overlay network using structured P2P protocol, and using tree-first protocol implement group member management, group status mantain and multicast data forward. To test the capability of the system, we use the discrete event simulation tools OMNeT++ to construct simulation model, simulate stream media transmission in the model. From the result of the simulation experiment, the project can carry out real time medium transmission with lower time-delay and low controlled cost. The prototype system has fault tolerance and expansibility, it can implement multicast application without changing the under layer network structure.
