During the development and popularization of telecommunication since 1990s, the technology of wireless telecommunication has been gained more and more attention and its application has been widely used. The"last-mile"network access technology has extended from lineate to wireless. In this background, the wireless metropolitan area networks develop quickly. In June, 2004, the IEEE released the standard 802.16-2004, which defined the air interface which provide high-speed wireless access service in 2-66GHz metropolitan area networks. This standard has defined four kinds of business flow. So, how to provide different kinds of QoS became an important and difficult issue. Although the MAC signaling has been well-defined in the IEEE802.16 specifications, we don't have the explicit management and scheduling algorithm for the resource, which is crucial to guarantee the QoS performance.First of all, we introduce in this paper the protocol of IEEE 802.16, and after which we analyze the mechanism of QoS, including the request and allocation mechanism of bandwidth, the admission and scheduling mechanism, give a complete introduction to the IEEE 802.16 QoS structure. Then this paper presents the part that the IEEE 802.16 QoS Architecture needs to be improved, including the admission control and its upstream bandwidth management, we propose our own research results in these two aspects. Our research results include the admission control policy based on link state and a fair and efficient bandwidth allocation scheduling architecture for IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access systems in TDD mode. The scheduling algorithm is better in solveing the issue of fairness between different business flow on the basics of real time. Through this QoS mechanism, we will be able to provide different levels of QoS guarantees for various applications. Simulation results show that the proposed IEEE 802.16 QoS structure is effective.
