Cooperative technology is a new requirement for the development of wireless networks and radio communication. It can make the best of all network elements and optimize networks.Therefore,it is important to make reaearch on cooperative localization algorithms adapted to wireless sensor networks.In this paper,several wireless localization systems are reviewed. Through the analysis on the basic principles of self-localization algorithms for wireless sensor networks, the effectiveness of some localization algorithms are evaluated according to range error,connectivity,anchor fraction and required device. This paper also summarizes the evaluation criterion of the performance and challenges for self-localization systems and algorithms for wireless sensor networks.This paper introduces a novel cooperative localization technology. Two advanced cooperative localization algorithms are presented:one is an Advanced Centroid Localization Algorithm,the other is a Grid-based Cooperative Localication Algorithm.The former uses weighted triangle-centroid and cooperative technology.The latter allows every node cooperate with its neighbors and uses a grid-based representation of the terrain to reduce the computational complexity. Extensive simulation results show that the method can decrease the localization error and locate the sensor effectively. It also enhances the accuracy and robustness of the localization system. Finally,This paper also suggests Some future directions for localization research and presents several new applications.
