More and more efforts have been concentrated on the studies of Field Emission Display (FED), for its high display quality and extra-thin body. The inner space of the device have to maintain vacuum to make sure the electronic movement while the displays bear 1 atmospheric pressure outside, so spacers are required in FED to prevent the distortion of display by balancing the difference of air pressures between inside and outside. But the spacers have some negative effects: such as difficult to maintain vacuum, contaminating the device, increasing the cost and deflecting the electron trajectory with charge spacers, etc. Good spacer structures are required that not only can offer better sustentation results, but also can reduce the negative effect with lesser spacer materials. The work of the thesis is about the research of the spacer structures. The main principles of FED are introduced. The thesis carries on the discussions from Finite Element Analysis theory of thin panel. Then the mechanical characteristics in various FEDs with 16:9 length-width radios in different parameters (such as spacers' positions and spacing) are analyzed with a widely used and internationally commercial software-ANSYS. Take small size of 104×58.5mm2 for example, the importance of spacer structure is proved by calculating. From the points of view that lesser spacers get better sustentation result for the FEDs with same display areas, the diagonal-arranged spacer structure, align-arranged structure, and wall-type spacers placed transversely are profoundly discussed and analyzed, with the distributions of stress and deformation. Corresponding modified structures are advanced to optimize the spacer structures, separately. In the thesis, the spacer structures in FEDs are analyzed theoretically. The results can give some guide to the device fabricated.
