Real-time video transmission over Internet is now a hot topic in multimedia communication area, and video compression is one of its key technologies. As the newest video-coding standard, H.264 has higher coding efficiency than other standards and better adaptability to various networks. It has been becoming a major video coding standard of the multimedia communication services. Consequently, it is significant to study the technologies of coding and network transmitting of H.264.This paper mainly focuses on the real-time transmission of H.264 video streams for conversational video services. The features and the structure of H.264 and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) are firstly introduced. Then we design and implement a real-time transmission system of H.264 video stream based on RTP protocol. This system introduces DirectShow technology, and follows the principles of component-based design. So it is of certain universality, and can be either used as a single system or applied into video conference systems or video monitor systems. Finally, this paper gives an example of its application in a video conference system.
