Wireless mesh networks combine advantages of ad hoc network and traditional infrastructure mode. In the wireless mesh network, the core guide value is that each node can receive and send signal. It means the communication between nodes won't need AP to forward any more. Data can be routed from the source node to the destination one in this kind of multi-hop network. In this way, the possibility of data flow congestion is reduced, and the network performance is improved. This paper firstly presents the research of protocol, architecture, character and application related to wireless mesh network. Secondly, the content is explanation of AODV (a passive routing protocol). And then more graphs are concentrated to describe the ETX metric arithmetic. We find the optimized scenario is to introduce ETX metrics to wireless mesh network to substitute the original method with the least hop counts. Together with modifying the wireless network card driver of exist frame, an ETX module is added. This module takes charge of sending probe packets every second to measure the success ratio of sending and receiving data packets, and calculate the ETX value of every link. When transmitting data, the first thing is looking up the link ETX value, and then choosing the path with the least ETX value to be the optimization route. Through an implement in one simple system, compared to the original version, it is proved that this method can increase the link transmission rate and improve network throughput, hence to enhance the performance of wireless mesh network. At last, the paper points the further research direction.
