Along with the fastest development of computer, communications technology, and the syncretism of 3C(Computer, Communications & Consumptive Electronic), the embedded systems are widely applied to many fields, including science research, engineering design, military technology, industry and commerce. The embedded technology has been the common direction of developing the products of communications and consumption.In this article, a hardware platform with a S3C2410X CPU is selected. ARM platform is the most popular embedded processor architecture. S3C2410X is a high performance CPU based on ARM920T core made by Samsung Corp., and has been widely used in embedded field. The article first introduces the architecture of ARM microprocessor and functions of S3C2410X, then the designs of hardware circuits are discussed in detail, including NAND Flash, JTAG, Ethernet and USB interfaces.The software design of this article is studying how to migrate Linux OS and device drivers to an ARM chip. First of all, the characteristics of embedded system, the structure of Linux in embedded application system and the initialization process are analyzed. And then the article performs the whole process of the migration, including preparing cross compilation environment, Bootloader migration, kernel migration, creating the root file system and finally device driver migration. By following the methods and techniques provided in this article, an ARM Linux development platform has been conveniently constructed, and is a very useful software platform for further development.At the end of this article, embedded facial identification system on door, an application based on the platform, is presented. The technology of facial identification has been more and more significant in biometric field. First, the hardware design and software diagram are introduced. The next part describes the functional parts of the system in detail and the system runs stably in the end.
