Nowadays, voice and streaming video traffic are becoming more and more popular in wireless networks besides the traditional cellular networks. However, due to their real time traffic characteristics, to provide a satisfactory support for them in the multi-service scenarios is still a challenging task for the service providers, especially in a WLAN system, where the stations get the transmission opportunity through the channel contention. Admission control is a good way to solve this problem, however, much more efforts have been put on the algorithms and a good architecture to employ the algorithms is still in great need. In this thesis, we propose a general, flexible, and easy to manage system architecture which can be used to realize the admission control function. The architecture is built on SIP, which is independent of the specific MAC and PHY techniques; the admission control algorithm is only one of the components in the architecture, which can be replaced easily for the system requirements; combined with the SIP session control process, it provides an easy way to manage the system. We demonstrate the architecture and evaluate its performance in a WLAN test bed.
