With fast development of network, there appears a lot of new applications, such as online meeting, video on demand, distributed computer system, online class, etc. There is a commonality of them, which is all of these applications are depending on the capability of transferring data from one computer to many others, or from many computers the many others. However, the traditional IP unicast technology can not handle with this situation very well. To meet the need of these applications, people introduce the technology of IP multicast, and in recent years, it develops very fast. By using IP multicast, we could transfer data more efficiently, at the same time we could take better advantage of bandwidth which is very limited in the Internet. In conclusion, transfer data by using IP multicast improves the situation of Internet and solve the problem of network congestion, as a result of this, IP multicast is becoming more and more popular, and it could be used in more and more areas. In this article, I have describe the process of developing the IP multicast software in routers. I have put forward the function module of it after I study and analysis the IP multicast technology. I am focus on the process of comprehending, developing and improving the IP multicast technology in this article.I have developed the IP multicast function module on routers, which includes IGMP and PIM-SM module. I have developed the software which aims at transfer information from one computer to many others or from many computers to many others, besides this, I have tested and analyzed it in detail. After this, I have put forward some ideas of improving PIM-SM, so as to make the transferring more efficiently.
