Nowadays we have already stepped into information age and knowledge economic society. The information resources have also become very important strategic resources, which will play more and more important roles in the development of the science and technology and the sustainable development of the economy and society. Modern information and communication technologies provide strong technical support for the collection, process, storage, transmission and usage of information, which lead to the rapidly increased information. Huge information supplies rich information resources and provide much convenience to people's work, life and studies. But on the other hand, people are flooded by huge information. It is very important and urgent to effectively organize and manage the information resources and provide high quality information services at the same time. As a concept modeling tool from the semantic and knowledge level, ontology is a new way to solve the problems and it has already drew much attention of the researchers worldwide. Furthermore, ontology construction is one of the most important research directions.This paper discusses about the basic theoretical knowledge of ontology and thesaurus, analyzes the necessity and feasibility for the conversion from thesaurus to ontology, successfully describes the terms and relationships among them of the Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus (CAT) with the newest language-Web Ontology Language (OWL), and then, designs and realizes a conversion system, which could convert the knowledge structures and semantic relationships of the CAT into agricultural ontology automatically. Constructing domain ontology based on thesaurus is not only a good way to build domain ontology, but also speed up the process, and that would also improve the ontology's rationality, normalization and authority.This paper also makes some attempts in the usage of ontology, designs and realizes an intelligent retrieve prototype system based on agricultural ontology, in the aspects such as intelligent navigation, broadening search scope and muli-language retrieve and so on. The experimental results show that, this system could provide friendly navigation, improve the recall factor and also finish some simple search task both in Chinese and English. As long as enriches and improves the functions of this prototype system, it will promote the traditional retrieve system, and will also have a great potential and value in practical usage.
