With the advent of the digital televisions, the HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coax) network's operations increase, Therefore the network's requirements, in order to ensure reliability, will be higher, An efficient solution would be the adoption of an open and standardized Network Management System.This paper is about a core equipment of the Management System: the Headend Element, which is located between the HFC network and the IP network, and it is responsible for the communication between the two networks.This paper aims mainly at the following researches about the Headend Element:(1) Based on the comprehensive analysis of the Headend Element, this paper designates its overall framework as follows: the embedded hardware and Linux software environment; apply the MAC protocol data structure, designed an effective data receiving algorithm; research the service filed of the MAC protocol, achieved the functions of the Headend Element that the MAC protocol support.(2) This paper analyzes the charateristics of transponder's registeration and polling, improves the protocol of registrations and polling conbined with the practice, the registration and polling efficiency is being enhanced. According to "one-to-many" working pattern, the implemented gateway function of the Headend Element, ensures the addressing of transponder, and carries out the protocol conversion between the HFC network and the IP network.(3) Taking in full consideration the communication characteristic amongst Headend Element and the transponder, and also considering the demand for multitasking and Real-time work, this paper designates an efficient way to use the serial port, ensuring Real-time registration, polling and data conversion.(4) Based on the characteristic and work environment analysis of the Headend Element, this paper designates a GUI (Graphical User Interface) system, implemented the transplant of the Headend Element system to the development board by the configuring and compiling, and achieved the initialization's optimization by the rebuilding of the Linux system's initialization. Throughout research and testing, this paper summarizes some disciplines about the transplant of the development board. In order to meet the technical requirements of the Headend Element, many improvements have been made in the protocol that the GB proposed. Based on the protocol and practical application, this paper improves the registration and polling processes, designates definite registration and polling solutions, enhances the efficiency of the Headend Element, and also ensures the functions of the whole HFC Network Equipments Management System.
