With the development of wireless communications,manufacturing technology and sensor technology,wireless sensor networks attracts more attentions.Wireless sensor network(WSN)is composed of massive,small and low-cost sensor nodes which are deployed in monitoring region,forming a multi-hop self-organized network system through wireless communication,the target of which is to cooperatively sense, collect and process the information of object in the coverage area,then send to the observer.WSN can be used in environment monitoring,military applications,medical treatment and so on.In WSN,medium access control(MAC)protocols determine the usage mode of wireless channel,allocate limited radio resource among sensor nodes and construct infrastructure.MAC protocols have a great influence on the WSN performance. MAC protocols of traditional wireless networks can't meet the design requirements for WSN,so they can't be used directly.Research on MAC protocols of WSN always attracts a lot of attention,which has ereat vractical significance.This paper analyzes the structure,protocol stack,application and development.The main work of the paper is as follows:(1)Through the analysis of the characteristics of WSN,the paper discussed the impact of MAC protocol problems related to the design,and mainly discussed 2 kinds of MAC protocols,the MAC-based on competition and based on the TDMA.And compare their performance and characters.(2)The paper used NS2 simulation platform,compare the energy consumption, throughput and time delay of IEEE802.11 and S-MAC protocol.The simulation results show that the 802.11 MAC protocol as a whole interception mechanism,will consume more energe,but is more complicated,and not suitable for WSN network. Although the S-MAC could save more energy than 802.11,it is not adaptable for the changes in network traffic.(3)Based on the current protocols' weakness and strengthes,the paper proposed a protocol.On the foundation of S-MAC,the new protocol using the TDMA mechanism solves the competition of nodes,and has a better performance.Then the paper used NS2 simulation platform,compare the energy consumption,throughput and time delay of the new protocol and S-MAC,and the result shows the new protocol has a better performance.At the end of the paper,there are a conclusion of done work and a plan of future work.
