In modern society, the age is filled with information. In people's lives and production, they have a wealth of information to be disposed, and the information people accepted most come from image. Research shows that about 70 percent of the information people obtained come from image information through eyes. In the field of image processing, there are two completely different methods. One method is optical image processing, and the other is the computer digital image processing. Optical method has a long history, it processes the information of light directly. This method is fast and has a large capacity of information. It's shortcoming is it relies on environmental too much. Digital image processing method develops with the development of computer. It transform the optical information into digital information for further processing, with flexible, convenient and can easily adjust the local characteristics. But this method relies on the hardware too much, and has a slow speed relatively. Therefore, in the era of information, development of opto-electronic hybrid image processing methods is proposed to take full use of advantage of optical and digital methodsIn this paper, we discussed the application and development trends of image processing, and the commonly used methods, principles and algorithms of digital image processing were more in-depth studies. We enhance the edge of images, segment the area of image, process image mainly in MATLAB in the frequency, try a Fourier transform processing and wavelet transform processing. And we adjust partial information of digital images, so that some edge and some detail of images was strengthened. After the processing, the results of two different methods of digital processing and optical results of the experimental were compared. And we use four methods to determine the results of image processing to get judgement. Four methods are intuitive comparison, line by line comparison, histogram comparison, the ratio of height to width comparison. After the judgement through the four means, we know that experiments with optical image enhance the image on the edge and outline, image become more clear, attain to the requirements of the various index, achieve regional segmentation of a several gray-level images. Fourier transform processing darken the overall image, lost some outline information, some but not all indicators meet the requirement, the method could be improved. Wavelet transform method is the best method. To the edge and outline of image has significant enhance, In the judgement of the indicators, it has outstanding performance. In introducing the ratio of height to width of the image comparison, we can compare the whole and the details of results quantitatively. We study quantitatively on edge enhancement and regional segmentation of image and the edge sharpness. We can easily compare all the advantages and disadvantages of any type image processing methods. Thist introduction has certain significance.
