Nowadays, H.264 and AVS typically figured as the 2nd generation video coding standards, which are considered to be as twice in compression efficiency as the 1st generation, are widely in practice. Based on these standards, this thesis makes a detail study on the stability and reliability of the codecs. The main contents of the thesis are as follows:1. In the respect of encoder stability, we make an analysis on the components of the encoder and categorize them based on software stability model. We then design a stable encoder structure which improves software maintenance, revisability and code migration.2. We make an analysis on the bitstream structure conforming to AVS-P2 and categorize the possible errors in the bitstream into two types, based on which we can presents different error detection techniques.3. Based on AVS-P2, we also present a new error detection technique. While it can not detect all the errors in the bitstream, it is really a very efficient technique. Moreover, it is inexpensive in computational complexity and is very suitable for realtime applications.4. Experimental study shows the influences on decoder by various kinds of syntax errors in the bitstream. The results should be useful for future design of more reliable video transmission systems.
