Now as cell phone and PDA are getting more and more popular, not only the 3rd generation wireless technologies begin to emerge in China, but also the 4th generation communication technologies are under active researches. Thus it is necessary for a handset to support web service. Yet handsets have different capacity, using dissimilar standard and new models are released to the market in very fast pace. Therefore, a highly compatible and portable web-service development platform for handsets can improve tremendously the efficiency to develop SOA-based (Service Oriented Architecture) applications for handsets. This has important practical and research value. To solve these problems and requirements this paper designed and developed a web service development platform based on Java virtual machine for handsets. The research is supported by national and provincial High-Tech Research and Development Plan and UT Starcom Company has provided the handsets. Java ME specification has been adopted. This handset emulator supports UEI specification, and users can seamlessly import it into Java IDE platforms such as Eclipse and Netbeans to improve development efficiency and standardize code. At the same time, this platform is backward compatible with virtual machine specifications, besides being forward compatible with web service specifications. Both this platform itself and Java ME application run on it are highly portable. The first chapter introduces basic concepts and message processing of web service, followed by discussions on its current research and usage status. The second chapter outlines design goals and performance level needed of the web service platform, and then described the architecture of the web service platform on the handset, including the KVM security mechanism, remote access module and XML data analysis module of web service. The third chapter researches the XML technology used under the OpenMedia platform, including encryption algorithm of xml file, mapping method from wsdl data to java data, parsing method of xml under web service module, at last, this chapter implements and tests the function module.Being considerate of the security, the fourth chapter discusses the remote access method that used under the web service module, and then implements and tests it.The fifth chapter uses an example web service application to illustrate how to develop Java ME application under the platform. Its basic workflow and performance are also discussed. Finally, work of the paper is summarized and possible future work is outlined.
