Networks exit to distribute information. This information needs to be communicated in an efficient, effective and reliable manner. Network management is important because it allows this useful work properly.Because of its simpleness and implementing easily,SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol)has become the actual standard in the network management field. There are three versions of SNMP which are SNMPv1 , SNMPv2 and SNMPv3.To overcome the lack of security in SNMPv1 and SNMPv2, SNMPv3 is greatly improved in its security and user management, and it makes use of the User-based Security Mode(USM)and the View-based Access Control Mode(VACM). USM could be used to avoid the modification of information, masquerade, disclosure, and delay or replay of messages.VACM could be used to check whether a specific type of access to a paticular object is allowed.Frist, this thesis provided the background of the network management system and its system architecture and types. Because of the shortcomings of current techniques of SNMPv1 and SNMPv2, we focused on the implementation of the SNMPv3 security features which are compatible with SNMPv1 and SNMPv2.The second section was an introduction to the conception of Network Management. Then this thesis introduced the framework, principle, security system of the SNMP network management and analyses the potential security leak. And then discusses and researches the SNMPv3 framework and the related MIBs.Subsequently, on the base of these, This paper emphasizes how to solve the security question in the coexistence of SNMPv1,v2,v3, and brings forward a feasible solution based Proxy which solve the security leak of the SNMPv1,v2 and in the compatible network environment, the implementation for a proxy software system and testing results is given. In the finality, the problems requiring further studies are discussed.
