With the popularity of Internet, multimedia information communication has achieved an ever seen depth and extent, and the distributions of such material also vary greatly. However, severe problems come out accordingly. For example, copyright encroachments become more easily and content tamper is also convenient. As a result, multimedia information security has become a very important and practical problem. In this paper, we first introduce the basic ideas and knowledge of information hiding and steganography. Then we introduce the characteristics and classifications of digital image processing as well as the research situation. The key techniques in information hiding systems are analyzed in depth. Subsequently, the existing information hiding and steganography schemes are discussed. Based on these, we present two new image hiding algorithms. The first proposed scheme is an image hiding algorithm based on entropy (IHBE). Traditional least significant bit (LSB) based image hiding schemes do not differentiate the textured area from the smooth area in the cover image. Our scheme makes use of the characteristics of the human visual system (HVS) and embeds few bits into the smooth areas while more bits in high textured areas. The second scheme is an image hiding algorithm based on image matching (IHBM). This scheme hides the image by employing the concept of image matching. It also incorporates the characteristics of HVS to increase the capacity in the premise of good invisibility. This scheme keeps the original characteristics of the cover image and it can resist the cover-stego attack. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a good trade off between high capacity and good invisibility.
