The limited network capacity has become a bottleneck problem in the applicationof large-scale Ad Hoc networks. Multi-channel technology is an effective approach thatcan boost network capacity due to permitting multiple pairs of nodes to concurrentlycommunicate in an interference range. However, existing standard Ad Hoc networkprotocols designed to use single channel fail to fully utilize the available spectrumresource. Hereby, it is necessary to develop standard multi-channel MAC and routingprotocols for Ad Hoc network. Firstly, this paper minutely analyzes some existingmulti-channel schemes for Ad Hoc networks and their shortcomings. Secondly, atheoretical algorithm based on Markov model for calculating the throughput is proposed. Some simulations are performed to show that the analytical results approximatelyaccord with simulation results. The throughput performance is analyzed while changingparameters, such as number of channel, length of data packets, density of nodes, channel switch delay. Lastly, a new multi-channel routing protocol (MCRP) is presentedto reduce channel collision among links by carrying out channel assignment for eachlink on a route in the course of routing discovery. This algorithm can be easily deployedon existing IEEE 802.11 hardware down to requiring no modification to the IEEE802.11 DCF on MAC layer. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate thatthe algorithm presented can effectively boost the capacity of networks.
