Steganography is gaining increasing recognition as a viable technology to protect electronic data from tampering. Compared to other data protection techniques such as access control and encryption, steganography can be more powerful because data under its protection are imperceptible to viruses, intruders, or would-be adversaries. No one can attack something he/she does not see or something whose existence he/she does not know.We proposes a Non-intrusive Add-on Steganographic (NAS) System that can be superimposed on existing file systems to provide concealment of user-selected files/folders with minimal changes to the underlying storage structure. Under NAS, an attacker cannot deduce the existence of concealed files/folders even if the attacker is very familiar with the implementation of the file system and has gained full access to it. Unlike current steganographic schemes, NAS requires just bare minimum modification to the file system, and is much more efficient and cost-effective.We implemented our NAS System based on FAT32 and NTFS under Windows XP/2000. Experimental results confirm that NAS achieves a magnitude of improvements in efficiency, usability and space utilization over the other existing steganographic schemes.
