It is required that original data should be stored in real time for the sakeof the processing and analysis of them later, especially in the field of aviationand space, telemetry and so on. The development of high-speed, large-capacitystorage device is necessary. Hard disks are playing an important role in thestorage devices for its small volume, its capacity and its direct access.This paper analyzes the principle of the hard disk and Windows file system.And the advantages and disadvantages of common file systems, such as FAT32,NTFS and Ext2 are discussed. It explains the internals of the Windows I/Osubsystem, the Windows Cache Manager, and the Windows Virtual MemoryManager.Based on the research, a linear file system is put forward, which can raisethe e?ciency of the disk read-write rate and data management in high-speed,large-capacity storage system. And the design idea and scheme are discussed indetail. The design and development of linear file system driver is discussed. Italso explains how the Windows file system processes user requests for file I/O.In the last, specialty of this paper is summarized.
