Because of the growing business nowadays, the data storage of many decision support systems and OLAP systems becomes critical to the life of a company. Now more and more eyes are taken on how to use the storage more efficiently to cut down the operational costs. And how to get a better performance when query on a table with huge volume of data. The data compression technology is introduced by this paper to solve the problem of making the full use of storage and getting a good query performance.The case used in this paper comes from the database design of the IT infrastructure of HP Company. The data compression technology was used in the data warehouse systems.There are two ways to achieve the data compression. The first one is the data compression algorithm, which will reuse the common data in a data block. The second one is to change the storage type of the physical segments in the database to force them share data. The both ways can reduce considerable mounts of storage and improve the query response time significantly. This technology is practical and useful in the real world.
