In recent years, with the fast development of modern communication technique in the whole word, personal communication and mobile communication are growing fast. The handset as a normal mobile communication tool is developing day after day; there are more changes and ideas about the function, structure and fashionable style everyday, which raise a higher requirement about the important RF part—handset antenna. The electronic and magnetic environment of the handset is very complex, and the used room for antenna is limited. Hence, how to realize the compact and dual-band/broadband handset antennas has been the research hotspot in recent years. To meet the requirements of users for high performance handsets, GSM900/DCS1800 dual-band handsets emerge as the times require. Using GSM900/DCS1800 dual-band handsets, the user can change the communication band between GSM and DCS freely, so the communication quality can be improved. The operational frequency range of GSM/DCS system is: 880MHz-960MHz for GSM, and 1710MHz-1880MHz for DCS. Designing dual-band handset antenna is the key when design the dual-band handset. The goal of this paper is to design the handset antenna for the GSM/DCS system. Now, microstrip antenna is used as handset inner antenna broadly. Based on widely reference of domestic and overseas literatures, the microstrip antennas theory and analysis methods are concluded and analyzed comprehensively. After studied many papers for compact and dual-band handset antennas, a monopole antenna and a PIFA antenna were designed for the mostly used flat GSM/DCS handset; a new style handset antenna was. designed for fashionable fold GSM/DCS handset. In the design of fold handset antenna, fold handset model was proposed, the influences of PCB length and rotate angle on antenna performances were considered. In the design, electromagnetic simulation software Ansoft HFSS9.2 was used for optimization design. Good results were obtained, which meet all the performance requirements. Based on these dates, three handset inner antennas were fabricated and tested for the GSM/DCS system. The results showed that the simulation results agree with the tested results, they meet the demands of the GSM/DCS system well and possess compact and dual-band characteristics, have good applied foreground.
