Ad Hoc network is an autonomous multi-hop system consisting of mobile nodes connected by wireless links without any centralized administration. As Ad Hoc network doesn't rely on any pre-established infrastructure and can be deployed rapidly, so it is quite suitable to be used in some special situations such as battlefield, disaster rescue, personal communication, wireless sensor network etc.The routing protocol is a hotspot in Ad Hoc network research area. Because of node mobility and power limitations, the topology of Ad Hoc network changes frequently. Routing protocols therefore play an important role in mobile multi-hop network communications.AODV is an excellent routing protocol. AODV scheme is introduced in detail and its performance is simulated using OPNET in this thesis. The simulation result indicates that AODV perform much adaptive in fast-changed dynamic topology network, but cost much routing overhead.Because simulation can't reflect the actual wireless environment, so it is important to evaluate AODV in physical channel. This thesis implements AODV protocol by using Netfilter tool based on Linux OS. Many nodes, consist of PCs and wireless interfaces, build an Ad Hoc network test-bed, which is used to evaluate the performance of routing protocol. According to the test result of AODV, a novel scheme to improve AODV, called AODV-SBR, based on simple backup route, is proposed and implemented. Hello message scheme is also taken into account to analyse the behavior of routing protocol. The final experiment results show the times of route discovery process initiated by AODV-SBR is fewer than AODV and the efficiency of AODV-SBR is higher than AODV in evidence, especially when the interval of Hello message is much smaller.Further more, this thesis develops an application software platform using C/C++ programming, called ARTS, to evaluate the performance of Ad Hoc network's routing protocol, which makes it easier to understand the routing scheme. This thesis also do some experiments baed on Ad Hoc network test-bed, such as connecting to Internet and video stream transport, to discuss the application feasibility of Ad Hoc network, which have a great reference value for future work.
