With the rapid development and applications of rare-earth doped fiber and the DWDM technology in optical fiber communications, EDFA with various novel structures and S-band became a hot and key research field in optoelectronic device. Due to the advantages of low noise, big plus, large bandwidth, high pumping efficiency and good work performance, it is applied widely in various fiber communication system specially in the WDM system. However, with the transmission channels increasing and the transport code speed improving of the WDM and DWDM systems, improving communication capability farther to meet the expanding increasingly demand has been the goal for fiber communication research to pursue. The low ullage window of quartz fiber ranges from 1450nm to 1650nm, but EDFA in C and L-band laid only over 1530-1610nm.Develop and making use of EDFA in S-band is one of the available approaches to make full use of the fiber bandwidth and improve the capability of the system.In this thesis, the status and progresses of EDFA are introduced and the configuration and principle of existing EDFA were analyzed and discussed, the EDFA based on the Giles model and S-band were deeply studied in details .The major worksand results obtained are as following:1. Introduced in details the develop history of EDFA and its practical application, summarized its advantages and disadvantages.2. Mainly focus on and discuss the properties of EDFA, contrast and analyze the different facture methods, meanwhile the contribution of pump in different wavelength were also analyzed.3. Energy level model of EDFA and its numerical value simulation method anatomized in detail, citing Giles model on the basis and applying the model the ASE characteristic of EDFA is studied deeply.4. Based on high thickness EDFA, summarize and analyze all kinds of abruptly perished theory model, and bring forward some perfect schemes.5. Introduced detailed in S-band fiber amplifier at home and abroad and analysed their principle, on this basis EDFA model were perfected, and simulation, analysis and summary were done.
