As the rapid development of economy and technology as well as the population growth, an increasing concern on the use of renewable energy is caused by the growing pollution and energy crisis due to the use of fossil-fuel-based energy. In this background, the solar power systems, especially the photovoltaic application systems, are becoming a hot topic in the new energy revolution.This thesis focused on the realization of a photovoltaic lighting system. Through analysis of the functions and electrical characteristic of the photovoltaic panel, a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) controller was proposed to optimize the usage of its energy, which was implemented both in the system and circuit levels.Through comparison among some MPPT strategies, an improved strategy was proposed. According to the strategy, system design of the MPPT controller was finally completed. The circuit design of the MPPT controller was realized in the 1.5um BCD technology. Some critical sub blocks in the system were analyzed in details. Simulation results showed that all the blocks work well and the expected performances of the MPPT controller were achieved.
