ASIC, FPGA, DSP and general-purpose processors are four traditional implementations used to process multimedia. Recently, heterogeneous multi-core processor, which consists of "the main processor & synergistic processor", has been developed rapidily, and drawn more attentions because it improves performance greatly in multimedia processing. The exploration of video codec based on this kind of processor, has significance for the research of heterogeneous multi-core processor in the area of multimedia. With the research of Cell heterogeneous multi-core processor architecture in this thesis, and the technology of multimedia decoding algorithm MPEG-2, the author presents a multimedia processing method based on the Cell heterogeneous multi-core processor in order to achieve the best system processing performance by addressing the data partition, data synchronization and SIMD parallel processing between the multi-cores. This thesis studies the detailed process of MPEG-2 decoding on the Cell processor, including the data between main and synergistic processor, and parallel algorithms for certain functions. Based on these researches, the author takes an MPEG-2 decoder as example to transplant and optimize it on the Cell processor. The experiment shows that the decoding performance can be improved significantly using these methods.Multimedia processing is an important application of heterogeneous multi-core processors. The optimization model and the parallel alogrithm of MPEG-2 video decoding on the Cell heterogeneous multi-core processor mentioned in this thesis could be extended to decode other multimedia standard, such as MPEG-4, H.264.
