With the rapid development of information technology, more and more enterprises build crucial business systems on the basis of distributed database systems. As the base and core of the information systems, the distributed database's reliability and performance has been gradually the focus of people's attention. It is very important to monitor the distributed databases to ensure their reliability and performance. Therefore, how to monitor the distributed databases in real-time to ensure that they can continuously run with high performance has become a task of general and practice significance for our current research. The paper chooses a certain system as research background. Considering the fact that current distributed databases monitoring systems always have some problems on real-time monitoring, alarming in advance, flexibility and reliability, a CORBA-based distributed databases monitoring system is designed and implemented. The system ensures the distributed databases running continuously with high performance through monitoring them in 7 X 24 hours and precisely alarming for the potential problem. On the basis of comparing and analysing primary databases monitoring systems and suming up their advantages and disadvantages, the paper makes following contributions:Firstly, we designed an architecture of the CORBA-based distributed databases monitoring system. Based on this architecture ,we partitioned the system's function modules, and illustrated the functions of each module and their interrelations.Secondly, considering that the monitoring content is excessive and numerous, we proposed level-based content presentation making the system more conveniently to use and effectively reducing the large communication cost brought by monitoring. We also studied prediction technique and applied it into the monitoring system for farther communication reduction.Thirdly, we designed and implemented a configurable and extendable monitoring strategy which can be used to set different strategy for different monitored server.Fourthly, we implemented the CORBA-based distributed databases monitoring system and tested its performance particularly. The testing result indicates that the system can monitor 50 Oracle databases at the same time and it has less negative impact on the monitored databases.
