Instant messaging (IM), with real-time and low-cost as its greatest feature, is one of the most important means of communication over Internet. With instance message softwares and VoIP application procedure, you can chat on text or ,also may use the pronunciation or the video frequency carries on chats, because the easy to operate also the fees are inexpensive, more and more people carry on the long-distance real-time conversation through the network.The massive illegal VoIP operation is flooding the regular telecommunication market in under the large amount benefit attraction, not only causes the legitimate operation business traffic load outflow, has broken the original telecommunication market fair competition pattern, therefore it is necessary to control the VoIP service. As an emerging way of network communication, unlike the mature network application such as e-amail, however, it has no unified standards. There is a variety of IM products and protocols, and they can't communicate with each other. This has not only hindered the further development of IM, but also brings great difficulties into the research and management of IM.We firstly explored current development of typical IM products. Major IM manufacturers'efforts in supporting IM protocol standards and in mutual communication show that research on universal instant messaging has become the development trend of IM. Then we studied the IM protocol standards, and identified their own characteristics and the inter-relationship among them. On this basis, we proposed a universal solution for IM, and established a common framework for analysis of standard IM protocols. In this foundation, with the network monitor and the analysis technology, we can identify the instance message network workflow, and make retrieval of content. finally realizing this research results prototype confirmation system.As for the multimedia application of IM, a detailed analysis of the mechanism of multimedia communication for mainstream IM products is presented. From the point of view of IM protocols, the implementations of IM multimedia communication are vastly different, but their multimedia data transmission mechanisms have a lot in common. We have abstracted a general protocol structure from the major IM products in the way of multimedia data transmission, and presented a universal strategy for the identification of IM multimedia data. We have also established a common framework for analysis of IM multimedia data, handling data from transmission layer and independent of upper IM protocols. Thus it is a universal solution for IM multimedia communication.In regard to Skype, which is representative of P2P-based IM systems, we analyzed its characteristics that make it different from general IM systems, and summed up its features of behavior in both statistics on network flow and payload of the packets. Based on that, we built a general framework to identify Skype data, which could correctly and efficiently recognize and extract Skype data from Internet.On the foundation of identification to the retrieval of instance message software voice and multi-media data,finally we designed and completed a common and embeddable system that could recognize and extract IM multimedia data. The system used the common recognition technology mentioned above which makes it highly scalable, and could easily be embedded into other systems. Experiments show that the system could accurately and efficiently recognize and extract various IM multimedia data, which lay a solid foundation for further control and management of IM multimedia communication.
