A sensor is the most advanced tool of information system. The appearance of smart sensors raises the development of detection technology to a new level. With the need of comprehensive parameters detection and the development of networked technology, networked smart sensors will become the hotspot of future research.A smart sensor not only makes microprocessor embedded in it for the conversion from analog signals to digital signals, but also exchanges data through the signal and data processing parts. Its capability of signal and data processing directly determines the level of its intelligence.The environment of smart sensors in industry is extremely poor, so it is particularly important to improve the performance of smart sensors. The intelligence is reached by utilizing the strong advantage of software, which uses the minimum hardware. In the same condition of hardware, the methods of the smart sensors' signal and data processing become the key which determines whether its performance is good or not.For the function requirements in industrial control, a smart sensor's signal and data processing functions are designed and realized in this paper. Meanwhile, a new type of networked smart geomagnetic sensor is developed according to the incremental model in Software Engineering. The functions of the networked smart sensor include self-calibration, self-learning, self-adaptation, self-diagnosis, A/D conversion, digital filtering, serial output, CAN bus output, measuring temperature and detecting ferromagnetic objects. In the laboratory and traffic environment, a function test is made to the networked smart geomagnetic sensor successfully.The test results show that the measurement accuracy and anti-jamming capability of a smart sensor can be improved effectively by the suppression of noise interference in Circuit Design and by signal and data processing functions with software in microprocessor. For a smart sensor, the efforts above make it networked, stabilize the two-way communication between it and PC, also lead to the decrease of capacity, cost and the extension of its functions. The results of this paper hold economic and practical value.
