Digital Image Processing is an advanced technology with booming development in recent decades, it means to complete the image processing to get some desired results, or extract some useful information from the image with computers. This kind of technology develops rapidly. Currently, it has been the target of study in many fields such as engineering, computer science and information science and so on. Its development and application has brought enormous economic and social benefits for us. The main feature of digital image is a large amount of image information, so the main factor of image processing is the issue of processing speed. There are a number of relative successful image processing technologies, involving DSP, FPGA and ARM etc, but due to inherent advantages and disadvantages in every kinds of hardware, although these technologies have advantages on processing, there are many shortcomings.This paper is divided into four parts. Firstly, the summary of the digital image processing is introduced, the development history and status are described. Several kinds of common digital image formats and image processing algorithms such as image edge detection algorithms are discussed. Secondly, several existing digital image processing technologies are compared and studied from aspects of hardware structure and processing speed, including signal DSP core and multiple DSP cores technologies, their advantages and disadvantages are pointed out, and then a new method of digital image processing system is proposed, that is, hardware structure of multi-processing unit, to improve the processing speed of the system, uses the instruction set control, to meet a variety of digital image processing algorithms requirements. Thirdly, the specific analysis of the main parts of the system is completed, considering two aspects of speed and area, and the detailed design scheme is given. Then, the detail design and verification of every module is completesd based on the system scheme analysis, giving the detail structure and verification results, the design and verification are completed with VerilogHDL language. After design, through writing the corresponding instruction codes and test file, an image detection algorithm based on Sobel operator is used to prove the correctness of the system's functions. In design, takes full account of the factors of speed and area, and to improve from the structure. Finally, the deficiencies of the system are proposed, and the follow-up work that should be completed is pointed out. In this paper, the design idea is from the comparative study of several existing digital image processor's structure, so the article focuses on the analysis and design of the system scheme, including processing array part, the storage part and the main control part, difficulty lies in the instruction decode and implementation of the main controller.
