Nowadays Yb-doped fiber is a hot issue in special rare-earth-doped fiber field. Ytterbium-doped silica fibers offer a wide range of applications as fiber lasers and amplifiers. Gain is available between 976 nm and 1200 nm using pump wavelengths in very wide range from 800 nm to at least 1064 nm. Highly efficient wavelength conversion, high power operation in a cladding pumped scheme, and single frequency lasting have all been demonstrated already with Yb-doped fiber. The simple level structure of ytterbium avoids problems like multiphonon decay, excited state absorption, and concentration quenching. However, we have discovered effects which seriously affect the performance in most of the investigated Yb-doped fibers. The dissertation focuses on the Yb-doped fiber fluorescence lifetime, and other parameters, as well as fiber laser for the study, includes the detailed descriptions on the following subject:1) The Yb-doped fiber fluorescence lifetime is studied theoretically. The measuring system for fluorescence decay is designed and built. The test for the Yb-doped fibers is done and the test results is analysed and summed up. What's more, I have done some research work about the Yb-doped fiber's fluorescence lifetime at different temperatures.2) Two-level model of numerical simulation are used to simulate the fiber laser with Fabry-Perot cavity. According to the simulated results, the influences of cavity-mirror reflectivity, fiber length towards the performance of fiber laser are discussed in great detail.3) The fiber laser with ring cavity is build. On this basis, the test for the Yb-doped fibers is done and the test results is analysed and summed up. According to the test results, the impact of fiber length to the laser output power and output length is studied.4) Theoretical study of the absorption coefficient and emission coefficient is done. I made a D-shaped cladding-pumped Yb-doped fiber. The effective absorption coefficient of the fiber through the method of fiber-cutting is measured and the results is analysed and summed up. The cladding-pumped fiber measurement of the absorption method is studied.
