In this paper we propose a method for computer to generate water animation with the style of paper-cuts. After analyzing paper-cut handicraft, we classify the hand-made paper-cut water patterns into three types: ripple, slow and torrent. The ripple water surface is still, we often find it on the lake. Slow represents the river with certain speed. While torrent is the water of high-speed type, so sprays are rolled up.Firstly, we construct their static models, including horizontal water surface models, slow spray model and torrent spray model. We exploit sine curve to fit the horizontal water surface, and use Archimedes Spiral and Epicycloids together to form the slow spray, also present a method with a few parameters which could be used for generating the torrent spray easily. Additionally, to simulate the interaction effect between the surrounding moving object and the slow, we construct one vectorial sailboat which will be utilized as the moving object on the water surface.Secondly, we consider time, as well as dynamic control mechanisms corresponding to various patterns, to construct their dynamic models. Ripple gathers in some area on its horizontal water surface, and its number and length depend on the distance from viewpoint, also the length randomly changes. The horizontal water surface of slow has hierarchical structure, its wave crest and trough have the interleave feature, meanwhile slow sprays appear. Similarly, torrent water surface is of hierarchy too, and it also has interleaving wave crest and trough, besides, torrent sprays arise. During the phase of animation, we configure various water patterns in space and time, including spray patterns appearing on water wave patterns and those surrounding moving objects on the water surface.Based on our model, we develop one system named Paper-cuts Style Water Animation Generation System. On this paper, we introduce the framework and main function of this system, together with some key technique during its implementation. Through our system, users only need to input a few parameters and specify positions of some wave patterns to generate fluent water animation with the style of paper-cuts. Relevant examples are given in the paper.
