H.264 is the latest video coding standard developed by ITU and ISO. Compared with the previous video coding standards, H.264 has made obvious progresses in coding efficiency by using many advanced coding tools. However, the performance improvement is at the expense of computational complexity. So it is necessary and meaningful to optimize the algorithms of H.264 standard both in academic and industrial purposes. In this paper, intra prediction mode decision and rate control algorithms were analyzed.Intra Prediction is a key technique in H.264. In this paper, a fast intra prediction mode decision algorithm, which decreases the complexity of mode selection by using edge direction and texture of the macro block was proposed based on the analysis of intra-prediction mode decision algorithm of H.264. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can increase the speed of intra coding significantly with the negligible loss of the PSNR.Rate control scheme for H.264 is different from the existing video coding standard by using rate distortion optimization. In this paper, the principle of rate control and some typical rate control algorithms were introduce first. Then the chicken and egg dilemma and the rate control scheme in h.264 were analyzed. At last, a suggestion in which the texture character of image can be used to improve the existing rate control scheme for H.264 was made.
