Space–time coding technology is mainly designed to combat fading by combining the technique of channel coding and antenna diversity, hence increasing the capacity of wireless communication systems. Space-time coding combines signal process with coding techniques appropriate to multiple transmit antenna and provides significant gain. It is a new solution to satisfy high data-rate of wireless communication in the future. Based on the MIMO system, the channel model of MIMO system and the channel capacity are learned at first in this paper, Secondly, the principle of space-time code is introduced, and design criteria of it for quasi-static flat-fading channels are given, and then the encoding theories, features, and performances of the important layered space-time code are detailed. Layered space-time codes achieve high spectral efficiency at the cost of partial diversity gain, in order to obtain more diversity gain, a layered space-time model combined with space-time block coding is discussed. At last, this thesis analyses and compares the detection algorithms of layered space-time codes, and finally introduces a iterative QR detection algorithm for layered space-time codes, which acquires better system performance with lower complexity.
