The IEEE defined 802.16 standards are designed to ensure an always-on wireless broadband data connection for both fixed (first generation, 802.16-2004) and mobile (second generation, 802.16e) users. With the ability to support multiple Quality of Service (QoS) classes, an 802.16 network can support mobile voice, high-speed data, and video in a wireless network. The 802.16 standards are endorsed by the WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) forum. This endorsement ensures both equipment interoperability and promotion of the standard.In the thesis, we investigate the IEEE 802.16 PHY(physical layer)protocols and Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. We focus on the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols,analysize the application and business case models and the requirement of developing a wireless chipset for the mobile station, research the processing MAC protocols by the digital integrated circuit.In this thesis, we design a highly integrated, IEEE802.16e compliant, MAC protocol processing system on chip (SoC) for mobile station. The SoC has two major components: Low MAC module and High MAC module. We will not only present the hardware design of Low MAC module and High MAC module, but also finish the detail design of the firmware MAC protocol stack which runs in the High MAC module.In the design, we use the ASIC/MCU hybrid architecture.The High MAC module which is implemented by embedded MCU will process the high MAC protocols. The design will avoid the complex development of ASIC, can update the firmware whenever the IEEE802.16 standwards are modified, and will implove the expansibility of the product. The Low MAC module which is implemented by ASIC will process the low MAC protocols. The design, which put the hardware to the process CRC and filter the packet by CID, will improlve the performance of the product.By the ASIC/MCU hybrid architecture, the SoC has the characteristics of high data process capability, design flexibility, easy expansibility, low complexity of the development and low power consumption, is suiteable for WiMAX mobile terminal.
