A bi-directional cable network will bring cable operators lots of new available services, such as Internet surfing, VIP, Video on Demand (VOD), Interactive TV, etc. Currently, DWDM, wire-speed core routers and metro IP networks are available in lots of cities. But the last mile of cable network is still un-directional, which makes the massive bandwidth of cable unable to be used efficiently.Actually, HFC network is a broadband (above 1GHz bandwidth) media to the end user. Upgrading the cable network to support bi-directional IP service will make the cable to be the best access platform in all kinds of access network. Although all of these advantages that HFC possesses over the telephone line, they have not been able to realize effectively as a result of some practical elements, such as restrictions on technique, high cost on remolding, and the low speed and stability of the connected cable network on transmission. AIC, which studied in this disquisition, can make these above-mentioned problems solved thoroughly.According to specific standard of the real network, by analyzing the three kinds of solution, ADSL, Cable Modem and xPON, expatiate a new bi-directional solution, AIC. The author shows the research of the hardware AIC gateway, realized the prototype of the AIC gateway.
