Ultra Wideband (UWB) is seen to be a technology for delivering very high data at very low power spectral densities. Compared to other wireless communication technologies, UWB gains polularity mainly for its attractive features: high transmission rate, considerable system capacity, robustness to multipath low power consumption and low cost. Especially, it does not need extra frequency spectrum, and can coexist with the existing wireless communication systems at the same frequency band, wich make it attract much attention nowadays when the frequency spectrum resource has become more and more precious.Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) is a communication technology that multiple antennas are set at the transmitters and/or receivers. The system capacity and frequency spectrum efficiency of communication system can be improved by this technology without extra frequency bandwidth and with no additional power expenditure. The MIMO system can provide both diversity and coding gains simultaneously through ST coding, hence yield high spectral efficiency and remarkable quality improvement. Applying MIMO techniques to UWB systems can exploit the advantages of both UWB and MIMO techniques. This paper investigates the techniques of MIMO and UWB. All the work can be summarized as follows: Chapter one gives the development of communication systems,.The fundamental concept of UWB system are introduced in Chapter Two, including the channel model, the modulation schemes and the multi-access patterns.Chapter Three presents the fundamental concept of MIMO systems, it also presents the encoding and decoding algorithm of space-time coding. The system performance of combining the UWB and MIMO techniques are investigated in Chapter Four, it mainly studies the performance of STBC in UWB systems, and it also gives some simulation results in realistic communication scenarios. The Chapter Five simply studies the system combining the channel coding and MIMO-UWB technologies.
