MIMO technology is a major breakthrough in the field of wireless communication and it can greatly increase the channel capacity and spectrum efficiency without expanding bandwidth. This paper works on the design, development and test of a MIMO transceiver which supports two transmit and two receive antennas scheme.Firstly, this paper deeply studies and analyzes the theories of MIMO system. The main features and the models of the MIMO wireless channel are analyzed and the channel capacity of MIMO system is studied and simulated. Then, the encoding and decoding algorithms of the space-time block coding are analyzed in detail and the Alamouti space-time coding is simulated to validate the outstanding performance of the space-time coding.On the basis of the theoretical studies, the MIMO transceiver of two transmit and two receive antennas scheme is designed. The platform is designed by functional modules, then the main function of each module, chip selection and circuit design process are introduced in detail. Meanwhile, part of the circuit is necessarily simulated. After the construction of the hardware platform, the basic transmitting and receiving function of single-antenna system is tested, which verifies that each module of the platform works properly. At last, the bit error rate (BER) of single-antenna system and MIMO system through real channel are tested. The outstanding performance of MIMO system is shown by comparing the BER performance with single-antenna system. All the tests above also validate the rightness of the system design and the usability of the transceiver.
