Aerial images are rich in information which have been widely used in military affairs, disaster relief, and other fields. But the frequency bandwidth of aerial wireless telecommunication is limited. Therefore, it is significant to research the real time and high effect aerial images compression algorithm in the situation of limited frequency bandwidth transmission.The characteristics of aerial images are analyzed by using mathematical model based on the imaging principle. It can be known that the aerial images are continuous images with small movement and a large amount of data. So, it will be advantage to take H.263 algorithm to compress the aerial images in real time.In order to meet the requirements of real time processing by H.263 algorithm, the parameters of H.263 algorithm need to be configured effectively. Software is designed to test the performance of H.263 algorithm with parameters configured on the VisualC++ platform. It is gotten that the H.263 algorithm meets the basic requirements of the compression according to calculate PSNR, compression ratio, as well as the time required for compression.According to transplant the evaluated algorithm to the VisualDSP++ platform, the image sequence is compressed by simulating ADSP21160 chip in software.
