3D modeling technology based on range data acquired by laser scanners has broad applications, such as digitizing historic sites and digital amusement. Recently, with decrease in the cost of scan laser and development in laser scanning techniques, the interest in the 3D modeling of real scenes from range data increases. However, the high complexity of the real world results in many difficulties and challenges. Combining the 3D scene reconstruction project cooperated with Dalian Taikang Company, the dissertation pay more attention to the surface modeling techniques of the building. The main techniques during original model reconstruction are discussed in great detail. In the field of relative localization techniques, we focus on the scan matching based relative localization algorithm ICP (Iterative Closest Point). And then, the GPS based global localization technique is used to get the global localization. With data registration, filter, smoothing, the surface model with point cloud is rebuilt. In order to get the mesh model of the building, automatic point cloud processing software is used. The experiment shows that the software can generate the mesh of the building quickly and effectively. In the field of mesh simplification, lots of researches and comparisons are done among various simplification methods. The edge collapse method is discussed in detail. According to the character of the building surface, an effective improved edge collapse method is proposed, which has improved the cost estimation and removed the narrow triangle. The algorithm has reduced the number of the mesh and maintained the detail character of the building surface, which is fit for the simplification in large-scale data processing. The main objective of inpainting is to recover the texture of the building model. An exemplar-based inpainting method called Criminisi is discussed in detail. First, image matting technique is used to extract the object. Second, an image segmentation method is used to realize inpainting in sub-area. This improved method can maintain the structure of the image and reduce the processing time. Further more, thinking of the image taken from different point of view will get more information, a several images-based inpainting method is proposed to get higher quantity result. Experiments show that the improved method can recover the building surface texture effectively.
