Nowadays the electronic manufacturing are developing faster and faster that traditional machining technology can not meet its demand in many situations. However laser micro machining technology can solve this problem in some extent because of its special superiority. Some outstanding advantages have shown a bright applications prospect in industry.With the financial support of a electronic company, a multifunction laser machining equipment used in the manufacture of coiled potentiometer was designed and fabricated, in which the laser micro machining technology was used to realize some complex processes such as joining a conductive thread on the coil, coating conductive pastes on the surface of coil to make a shortcut of a circuit, welding between two metallic slices , marking on the surface of metal component , etc.According to the requirement of manufacturing process of coil potentiometer, we put forward a new scheme for the multifunction laser machining equipment, which was composed of two YAG laser and two worktables. The laser beam can be freely switched and focused to the surface of workpieces with compact structure so as to meet the requirement of the manufacture of coiled potentiometer such as several working procedures. The"NC inset PC"mode is adopted to establish numeric control system of the worktable. The resolution of the worktable can reach±0.005mm . Besides, a CCD was also used to help precisely determine the machining positions on the workpieces for laser micromachining.Some laser machining processes such as joining a conductive thread on the coil, coating conductive pastes on the surface of coil to make a shortcut of the circuit were studied systematically. The composition selection of polymer conductive paste was discussed in this paper. The mechanisms of conductor formation were analyzed based on the experiment results. The size of weld point can be controlled within three resistance threads (100μm). And the location of shortcut circuit can also be controlled precisely with its±1o deviation and good conductivity .Based of above researches, the processes of laser micro machining were optimized and the concern equipment was manufactured. This technology has been applied in the industrial production environment successfully and brought great economic and social benefit.
