The unwanted clutter reflected from the sea surface is called sea clutter, which has bad influence on the radar detection and position tracing. It's necessary to analyze the characteristics of sea clutter and establish the correct sea clutter model. On the one hand, exact sea clutter environment can be provided for the radar system simulation. On the other hand, the clutter filter is easy to design and realize. So the modeling and simulation of sea clutter is helpful to enhance the radar detection ability.Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is a Heuristic stochastic global optimization technique, and is also an evolutionary computation technique based on swarm intelligence method. The particle swarm algorithm searches out the optimal regions in complex searching space through the interaction of individuals in a population of particle. What makes PSO predominant is that it is easy to calculate, simple to realize and used widely in many fields. The classical particle swarm optimization algorithm and several of its variants and some applications are introduced in this paper.The so-called modeling of sea clutter is to generate the stochastic sequence with special probability density function (PDF) and power spectrum distribution (PSD). There are two mature methods to simulate: Spherically Invariant Random Process (SIRP) and Zero Memory Nonlinearity (ZMNL).ZMNL is adopted in this paper to simulate all kinds of sea clutter and the simulation result is given too. Further more, the generation process of sea clutter can be simplified to a parameter optimization of linear filter, combining with the distinguishing features of amplitude distribution and spectrum distribution. And then, PSO is applied to the parameter optimization so as to get more satisfactory clutter simulation.Simulation results show that the application of PSO in the generation of sea clutter is feasible totally.
