The fiber ring laser based on Semiconductor Optical Amplifier(SOA) has very important functions in the all-optical network(AON), such as ultra-short pulse generator, all-optical wavelength conversion, all-optical clock recovery and so on. The SOA fiber ring laser(SFRL) has obvious advantages. For instance, it has simple implementation, output signal with high extinction ratio and large wavelength conversion span. In this thesis, we use three different structures of SFRL to obtain 80GHz ultra-short pulse generation, 40Gb/s all-optical wavelength conversion and 10Gb/s all-optical clock recovery and this work is supported by Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China(Grant No.863-2002AA312160), Sci&Tech Breakthrough about Optical Communication of Wuhan(Grant No. 2002100513013) and National Natural Science Foundation of China(Grant No. 60407001). We simulate the characteristic of the application of the SFRL and several experimental studies have also been carried out. The main achievements and conclusions are listed as follows:(1) The research signification of the SFRL is analyzed. The configuration of the SFRL are summarized.(2) The theoretical models of the SOA are established. The numerical models of the SFRL are also established which are based on the SOA model. The experiments have demonstrated 80GHz ultra-short pulse generation and achieved ultra-short pulse with high extinction ratio of 15dB and low time jitter of 400fs. We also theoretically analyze the high order non-linear effect in the SOA.(3) The characteristic of the SFRL is theoretically analyzed when the SFRL is used as all-optical wavelength converter. The relationship between the SOA biased current and output power of the SFRL is studied. 40Gb/s all-optical wavelength conversion using SFRL is also achieved experimentally. We have researched the output characteristic of the SFRL in the condition of frequency detune, established its theoretical model, and demonstrated it with the experimental results(4) The application of the SFRL used in all-optical clock recovery is researched. 10Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero(NRZ) and 40Gb/s return-to-zero(RZ) all-optical clock recovery are obtained in experiments. A novel scheme based on polarization-maintaining fiber loop mirror(PMFLM) has been proposed to realize NRZ to pseudo-return-to-zero(PRZ) conversion. This scheme is simple to constructed and has no bandwidth limitation in principle. This novle scheme has been already applied for a national patent.
