This paper originates from 2005 Chongqing Strategic Project– Chongqing University Special Topic《Scientific Strategic Technology Studies and Construction of Enviromental Safety Warning Platform of the Three Gorge Water Resevoir》(CSTC 2006 AA7024). By comparing and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of existing wireless sensor network structures and their topologies, this paper proposes a system structural plan that consists of two sub-systems: sensing control platform and RF wireless communication platform. The emphasis of studies and designs will focus on modulation schemes, modulation parameters, source coding, channel coding, frequency composition, wave formation, filtering process and baseband circuitry designs. An energy consumption model and simulation was establish from the extensive research and exploration on sensor network system structure, wireless communication modules and their energy consumption relations, especially the interactions between the physical layer modulation scheme, channel coding and energy consumption. This results a thorough analysis and comparison, and obtains the corresponding energy consumption outcome, and provides a theoretical accordance when selecting module hardware and integration. This paper also exploits and designs hardware and software on low-power sensor network node modules.This paper presents the following research work and results:1. Analysis on current sensor networking technology and its future developing trends, discussion on its applications and future.2. Analysis on wireless sensor network system structure and energy consumption of each module, proposal on sensor network system design.3. FEC energy effects on FSK, PSK and OFDM modulations, energy management scheme based on MATLAB simulations.4. Design and implementation of wireless platform hardware and peripheral circuits, core RF circuitry, antenna and connection between wireless platform and control platform sub-systems.
